About
Global and coastal sea level in plain language.
What this version includes
- Global mean sea level (GMSL) — NOAA satellite altimetry, refreshed regularly from NOAA.
- Rise rate & rate change — derived from that series (5-year rate; early-vs-late acceleration proxy).
- Ice-sheet context — Greenland and Antarctic loss rates from IMBIE (manual reference).
- Coastal cities table — relative tide-gauge trends and illustrative 2050 ranges (reference JSON).
- Map & IPCC scenarios — sample stations and SSP envelopes (reference JSON).
Relative vs absolute sea level
The satellite chart is absolute global ocean height. Tide gauges at cities measure relative sea level — the water plus whether the land is sinking (Miami, Jakarta) or rising. Never compare a city’s mm/yr directly to the global satellite rate without reading the land-motion column.
Not in this version
- Live PSMSL API map — station map uses reference coordinates, not ~2000 gauges live.
- Per-city projection pages — table only; no NASA tool embed yet.
- Auto-updated IMBIE — ice KPIs update when we paste a new assessment.
